Protecting food from pest attacks and pollution is a central issue. However, the impact of food pests is extremely high: just think that more than 100 million tons of cereals are destroyed every year in the world. Despite the adoption of appropriate measures of preservation and prevention, we often come across paradoxical situations of food losses.
Â
Colservice executes disinfestation treatments with toxic gases in stored cereals, empty buildings, grain bins, flour mills and pasta factories. The gas used is PHOSPHINE or PHOSPHORETTED HYDROGEN, in combination with CARBON DIOXIDE. The use of these two gaseous products also allows us to decrease the dose of the phosphine-based formula with the same results.
We hold all the authorizations issued by the appropriate territorial or national bodies to execute these kinds of fumigation services; our technical staff, who deal with these services, are qualified and hold a regular licence, and the fumigating agents used are all registered by the Department of Health. As for the treatment of empty plants (warehouses, flour mills, pasta factories, and confectionery and fodder industries) we also plan interventions using SULPHURYL FLUORIDE.
Â
An extremely specialised treatment is the so-called quarantine or pre-shipment. It is executed to adjust rough wooden packaging, food and stocked goods to extra E.U. shipment. The gas we use is the METHYL BROMIDE and our intervention is guaranteed within 24 hours from the notice.
Â
Finally, we execute fumigation with CARBON DIOXIDE which has a completely different intervention procedure, both in terms of the subject of treatment and the results yielded over time. Such a treatment causes the asphyxia of pests. The length of the exposure time also allows us to eliminate the vital stages of egg and pupa, which are notoriously more resistant to these techniques since they are able to slow down their metabolism. CO2 treatment is considered as biological and thus also useful for companies which are already certified as organic
